Step 3: Select a Web Hosting Platform

At this stage, you already have a domain name of your choice and have checked its availability.

Now, the next thing is to get the domain host.

Just like the name suggests, a domain host is a platform that specializes in hosting your domain name. A domain name is used in a URL address for a website, such as www.justkidding.com. In this example, the domain name is justkidding.

Most hosting platforms offer great discounts during the first year of hosting.

Bluehost used to be famed for the best deals for domain registration and hosting. However, we discovered a better and more reliable alternative that I thought you might want to know about.

Welcome to Hostpapa.

This is a relatively new hosting pform that capitalized on the downsides of most of its predecessors. As youll soon realize, Hostpapa is a budget hosting tool that is quite intuitive.

To make it easier for you to follow through this guide, we recommend using Hostpapa and WordPress as your hosting and content management platforms, respectively.

Other than the seamless integration of these two platforms, Hostpapa offers all first-time signups a free domain registration, website transfer, a 30-day money-back guarantee, and more.

In this guide on how to start a cooking blog, you will be taken through the process of getting signed up on Hostpapa and ultimately building your WordPress blog. The process of signing up on a hosting platform may differ depending on the one you choose; however, once you connect to WordPress, everything is pretty much the same.

By the end of this post, ideally, you should have a fully-hosted and publishable food blog.

That said, lets get right in!

Head Over to Hostpapa

As mentioned earlier, the platform offers huge discounts to all first-timers.

Additionally, we also have a partnership with them whereby all sites signed up using our link get a further discount.

You can sign up using our link right here.

You should see a Get Started button. Click on it to proceed.

Select Your Preferred Plan

Hostpapa features three hosting plans, the Starter, Business, and Business Pro packages as shown below:

Depending on your preference, you can select any one of the three plans. However, as a beginner, it would make sense to select the Starter package with an option of scaling it up later.

Unlike most other platforms, such as Bluehost, Hostpapas Starter plan allows you to host two websites. It also comes with all other essential features you would expect in a hosting platform including a detailed cPanel, free training materials, and 24/7 support.

Of course, if you went for the Starter plan, youd miss out on a few extra features. Nonetheless, youll realize that when starting out, youre better off familiarizing yourself with the basics as you take baby steps toward the more advanced tools.

Register Your Domain Name

Hostpapa grants you two options, depending on whether youve registered your domain name or not.

If you havent registered it yet, type it in under the provided area.

Take note that youre not required to type in the .com or .uk suffix, as that will automatically be generated with the name.

If your domain name with a .com is taken, you will be given other available suggestions including those with a .org, .business, and so on.

You can either select and register one of the provided options, or simply alter the original domain name to allow you to register one with a .com.

As you can see above, our example (www.justkidding.com) is already taken, so we can either forego it and look for something else altogether, or simply pick one of the provided choices.

But since we love this domain name, lets try to tweak it a bit to see if we can get away with something close to that.

And were in!

Weve made a few changes in the name, but it still portrays the same message.

Next, select your domain and proceed.

You will then be required to provide some basic info about you to register your domain, including name, country, city, email, and phone number.

Being one of the best food blog hosting sites, Hostpapa maintains utmost secrecy of user information at no extra cost (unlike a few other platforms that require you to pay for the privacy of your data).

Make the Payment

Once youve filled in all the details, youll proceed to pay for the hosting service. You can either pay using your Visa, American Express, MasterCard, or PayPal.

While you may initially go for the Starter plan, you are at liberty to upgrade anytime you wish to.

Hostpapa allows you to switch between your plans depending on your preferences. All youll need to do is to pay for the extra cost required for the upgrade.

You will also be required to choose whether you wish to pay for 36, 24, or 12 months. The system will automatically place you on the 36-month plan, since it offers the best value.

However, if youre working on a budget and wish to try things out before getting in fully, consider switching to a 12-month plan which attracts slightly higher monthly premiums.

Before submitting your payment information, make sure that youve read the terms and conditions of the platform.

Once thats done, finish the sign-up process. You should now be ready to start building your blog on WordPress.

Upon submitting your details, an invoice will be displayed on your screen with the option of printing it; print or save the invoice for your records before you move on to the next phase.

Start Building Your Blog

Hostpapa has its own web-builder. So, if you dont want to use WordPress, you can use their builder.

However, in this guide, well use WordPress.

A few minutes after completing your domain registration, you should receive a couple of emails detailing how to go about working on Hostpapa. You will be provided with, among other things, your cPanel login details and a starter guide.

From your cPanel, you should be able to do just about anything from creating email addresses, downloading applications, adding users, and more.

You can also use the Search button to find anything that doesnt seem to appear on the panel.

WordPress can easily be downloaded with one click from the cPanel.

Once youve downloaded WordPress, proceed to customize your website accordingly.

if youre looking to make use of the drag-drop web builder, from the Hostpapa cPanel, youll need to navigate to the menu called My Website.

Next, go ahead and install WordPress and then register.

As we come to a close, Ive compiled a few useful tips to help you in your blogging career.

Tips on How to Become A Food Blogger

If youve chosen this path, you might as well be aware that there are over a billion blogs breaking the internet as we speak. So, anything you leave to chance may keep you a billion miles away from your audience.

To remain competitive, consider applying the following tips:

  • Stay consistent: It is one thing to start a blog and another to keep it running. Once youve built your blog, the heavier work of keeping it running begins. Understand that keeping your blog running doesnt mean you publish content every now and then. You must regularly publish valuable content. Youll need to understand what exactly your readers wish to read and not just what feels good to publish. Weve explained this further in this post.
  • Carve a name for yourself: By this, I mean be authentic and as original as possible while keeping in mind what your readers want. Instead of trying so hard to be that brilliant vegan food blogger youre not, why not make something unique using  your expertise in Italian dishes? Ensure that you bring fresh ideas to your readers if youre looking to boost your traffic and ultimately make some money off your art.
  • Go the extra mile that others wont: Believe it when I tell you, readers will be grateful for your extra efforts. Avoid copy-pasting images of dishes or even recipes. Why not experiment with your own recipes and see how it turns out? And while at it, take photos or record your own videos. This demonstrates to your readers your level of commitment to what you do, and theyll not disappoint when you need them to reciprocate. And when you commit to this line of blogging, youll realize that it is much easier to maintain high productivity.
  • Have fun: Thats right! Have you ever realized that you tend to craft the best pieces of writing whenever youre not doing it for the money? Well, I have. As a food blogger, youll interact with a wide range of people including experienced chefs or individuals looking to learn something in your niche. The moment they read your content and realize how not-so-great it is, you can almost guess when theyll come back to your blog never, right? My point is, strive to write like a foodie and not a professor of Atomic Physics; sometimes it doesnt have to be that serious!

Congrats once more, you made it!

You should now be a proud owner of your niche site, having learned everything there is to know about how to start a food blog.

As your blog progresses, remember that the real work begins once you go live. You have to thoroughly market your blog to be able to improve your readership. Other than relying on your own site to market your content, consider using other channels such as social media platforms. Try to learn what it takes to successfully market your work on social media. Others are doing it, and you can too!

Lastly, youve taken a very bold step by starting your own food blog I promise you that your future self will be proud of you!
